Story Behind the Invention

Inventor Douglas Surprenant of Holbrook, MA has designed a plush add-on for walking aids that gives cane users a furry companion and plenty of positive feedback.

Many walking aids lack personality, but adding a spark of joy is possible. The inspiration for the Walking Companion came from Douglas's dad, who was never fond of having to walk with a cane. That all changed when he added Sparky, a whimsical attachment, to the bottom of his cane. Suddenly, every outing became enjoyable. Young people would stop, chat, or interact with his new pet. Witnessing this, Douglas was determined to help others feel the same delight. It was then he developed the Walking Companion!

This plush accessory slides onto any cane, securing neatly over the rubber tip or claw feet. Adjust it in place and your cane becomes a cheerful pet strolling by your side. The Walking Companion also raises awareness of your movements, reducing trips and ensuring safety while making every outing more fun and interactive.
