New Carpet Installation Tool Eliminates Damage to Carpets, Subfloors, and Installers
Stretch Mate’s friction-based gripping system replaces knee kickers, stingers, and power stretchers with a single, damage-free attachment
Inventor Michael Nilson has introduced Stretch Mate, a carpet stretcher head attachment designed to solve the most persistent problems in carpet installation: material damage, structural damage, and installer injury.
For decades, carpet professionals have relied on tools that compromise either the carpet, the subfloor, or their own bodies. Knee kickers cause chronic knee injuries. Stingers puncture carpets and wooden subfloors. Power stretchers are expensive, require a power source, and are difficult to control. All of these methods risk damage to surrounding walls and structures.
Stretch Mate takes a fundamentally different approach. Its dual-plate systemfeaturing front and rear plates with strategically positioned spikesgrips the carpet backing through controlled friction rather than penetration. The spikes engage the carpet fibers firmly enough to stretch the material but never puncture through to the subfloor beneath. This friction-based gripping also allows Stretch Mate to work on vinyl and concrete subfloors where traditional stingers are completely unusable.
The attachment connects to any standard carpet stretcher body and features a pivoting head mechanism with an adjustable extension rod, giving installers precise control over tension angle and pressure. The result is uniform carpet tension, fewer callbacks for wrinkles, and significantly faster installations.
“Every carpet installer I know has knee problems or has dealt with damaged carpet on a job,” said Nilson. “Stretch Mate was designed to eliminate all of that. It grips without puncturing, stretches without a kicker, and works on any subfloor.”
Stretch Mate is constructed from lightweight aluminum and stainless steel for durability and ease of use. The spike plates are removable and replaceable, and the entire attachment is designed for quick setup with no specialized training required.
