Story Behind the Invention

Anyone who has ever reached for a tube of mascara with moisturizer still on their hands knows the frustration. The lid slips. Your fingers slide off. You try again. For Lori Patrick of Cape Coral, Florida, that small daily annoyance became the spark for something practical and long overdue.

Lori noticed that cosmetic lids are designed with almost no thought given to grip. Whether you’re applying foundation, lip gloss, or cover-up, your hands are often coated in product by the time you reach for the next one. The smooth, uniform surface of a standard lid gives you nothing to hold onto. She found herself struggling to open tubes she used every single day.

Her solution was simple: add a thumb indent. A small, deliberate groove built into the lid the kind your thumb naturally finds without thinking. No ridges, no rough textures, no complicated mechanisms. Just a smart, ergonomic design that works with the way people actually use these products.

The Mascara Lid is designed to fit cosmetic tubes across the board mascara, lip gloss, cover-up, and more. It is especially useful for anyone with dexterity challenges or for those whose hands are frequently covered in the very products they are trying to open. The indent gives the thumb somewhere to land, allowing the lid to twist off cleanly and close back securely.

Lori’s invention is currently in the process of receiving design patent protection. She built it out of necessity and she knows she is not the only one who has needed it.
